Tomiyama Ichiro

Tomiyama Ichirō is professor in the Graduate School of Global Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto. He teaches and writes prolificially on modern Okinawa and the related issues of the Japanese nation-state and its formation, colonialism, militarism, violence, gender, and postcolonial memory. His pioneering work in Okinawa studies includes (in Japanese) Memories of the Battlefield (1995), Presentiments of Violence: The Problem of Crisis in Ifa Fuyu’s Writings (2002), A Geneology of the “Okinawa Problem” (2013), and Beginnings: Fanon, Clinically Situated (2018).
